Why Does My RV Sway So Much on the Highway? Here's What's Actually Causing It
Short answer: RV sway on the highway is usually caused by worn or undersized shocks, not wind, not tires, and not the trailer if you're towing one. The shocks control how much the coach leans and rebounds, and factory shocks are rarely matched to the actual loaded weight of the rig.
This is the question I hear more than almost any other, usually described a few different ways: "it feels like a boat," "semis passing me feel dangerous," "my wife won't let me drive it in wind anymore." Different words, same root cause almost every time.
The Usual Suspects People Blame (That Aren't the Real Problem)
Owners usually go through this list before they call us:
- Wind. Real, but not the cause, a symptom multiplier. A well-controlled coach handles wind fine. A poorly damped one gets pushed around by it.
- Tire pressure. Worth checking, genuinely matters, but rarely the full story.
- Alignment. Also worth checking, but alignment problems usually show up as pulling to one side, not general sway.
- The trailer, if towing. People assume the trailer is wagging the dog. Sometimes true, but often the coach itself is already unstable before the trailer's involved.
The Actual Cause: Underdamped Shocks
Here's the mechanical reality. A shock's job is to control the spring. Without a shock doing its job, the spring would just keep bouncing after every bump, and the coach would keep leaning after every steering input or gust instead of settling back down.
Factory shocks on most Super C and Class C chassis are sized for a lighter, more generic load than what your specific coach weighs once it's built out and packed for a trip. So the shock is under-spec for the job from day one. It's not broken, it's just outmatched.
Add a few years of miles and heat cycling, and even a correctly-spec'd shock loses its consistency. Oil and gas start mixing inside the shock body (this is called aeration or foaming), and damping performance drops off, especially on long highway drives when the shock is working continuously.
That's the wandering, leaning, "boat" feeling. It's not one bad moment, it's the shock losing its ability to control the chassis consistently over time and distance.
How to Tell If It's Your Shocks
A few quick checks:
- Push test. Push down hard on a corner of the coach and let go. If it bounces more than once or twice before settling, the shock isn't controlling the spring anymore.
- Leaking or oily residue on the shock body. That's fluid escaping, and it means damping capacity is dropping.
- The feeling changes on long drives. If it's fine for the first hour and gets worse from there, that's heat-related fade, a classic sign of an undersized or worn shock.
What Fixes It
An IFP (internal floating piston) monotube shock, sized correctly for your coach's actual weight, solves this at the source.
