Shocks wear out slowly
Shocks lose control a little at a time, so most people don't notice until it's bad. Here's what to look for.
On the road
- The rig keeps bouncing after a dip instead of settling.
- More sway in crosswinds and when a semi passes.
- The nose dives when you brake hard.
- The ride feels floaty at speed and harsh on sharp bumps.
- You're more worn out after a long day behind the wheel.
On the shock and tires
- Oil on the shock body. A light film can be normal. Oil running down the body is not.
- Dents or a bent shaft.
- Worn or cracked mounts and bushings.
- Cupped tires, with a scalloped pattern of high and low spots around the tread.
How often to check
Look at your shocks once a year and any time the ride changes. On RVs and heavy trucks, also check them before a long trip.
Replace or rebuild
Every HD Shock can be rebuilt. When it's worn, send it in instead of throwing it away. Not sure what you have? Call 661-243-0020 and we'll help you figure it out.
